On November 27, December 4, and December 11, the online lecture series “Care Beyond Borders: Transnational Perspectives on Enhancing Retention in the Care and Nursing Sector” will continue.
Securing and retaining skilled workers in nursing and elderly care has emerged as critical challenge on a global scale. Across various countries, significant shortages have led to intensifying competition for care professionals and nurses on multiple fronts: between countries, urban and rural areas, and even among healthcare facilities. Despite the indispensable role of migrant care workers, a myriad of challenges persists, including obtaining residency permits, having qualifications recognized as well as practical obstacles such as language barriers and systemic knowledge.
Join us in our interdisciplinary lecture series as we embark to understand these dynamics on migration, displacement, and inclusion in care work, nursing and beyond the workplace. Drawing on leading academic research and expert insights, we endeavor to foster a nuanced understanding on intersectional challenges faced and possible strategies to overcome these when looking specifically at retaining skilled workers in the care and nursing sector.
This lecture series is organized in collaboration by two projects at the Center for Human Rights at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. The project “Gesundheit! Inclusion in the care and nursing sector”, funded by Stiftung Mercator, is an interdisciplinary project aiming to identify favorable working and living conditions for employees with so-called migrant backgrounds in the care and nursing sector. It seeks to generate impulses and recommendations that structurally promote equal and equitable inclusion and retention within institutions and in regions in Germany. The events are held in collaboration with the joint project “FFVT: Forced Migration and Refugee Studies: Networking and Knowledge Transfer“, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), which aims to strengthen interdisciplinary research on forced migration and refugees in and beyond Germany.

On May 16th, June 6th and June 27th, the online lecture series “Care beyond borders: Exploring impacts of migration, displacement and inclusion for the care and nursing sector” will delve into the intersecting themes of migration, displacement, and integration in the nursing and care sector – addressing the associated challenges and potentials by incorporating academic research.
This international and interdisciplinary lecture series aims – by three one-hour evening sessions in May and June – facilitate discussions on current scientific research. In our first session on Thursday, May 16th, 2024, we will initially focus on the field of care migration in general, its economic impact as well as its impact on the individual. Subsequently, on June 6th, 2024, we will examine the employment of refugees in the nursing sector and issues of inclusion and exclusion. The third and final session of the summer semester on June 27th will address diversity in everyday nursing and care practice. Further sessions in the winter semester are being planned.
This series is organized in collaboration between two projects of the Center for Human Rights at FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg: The Stiftung Mercator-funded research-practice project “Gesundheit! Inclusion in the Nursing and Care Sector” aims to identify good working and living conditions for employees with migration backgrounds in the nursing sector to generate impulses and recommendations that promote equal participation and retention in institutions and the region. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF)-funded collaborative project “FFVT: Forced Migration and Refugee Studies: Networking and Knowledge Transfer” aims to strengthen interdisciplinary refugee research in and beyond Germany.

In March 2023, the hybrid conference “Systemrelevant und systemisch benachteiligt? (Forced-)Migration and Health Care: Access, Participation, and Employment” was held at the Kollegienhaus of FAU, organized by FAU CHREN.
The event focused on the multifaceted role of persons with a so-called migration backgrounds—both as recipients of healthcare services and as employees in the healthcare sector—and the related challenges and opportunities. Incorporating both academic and practice-oriented perspectives, the conference addressed two main themes:
- Questions of inclusion and exclusion of refugees regarding their access to healthcare services.
- The important role of people with so-called migration backgrounds as workers in the care and nursing sectors.
The Conference Proceedings (PDF, German) are available for download. Recordings of selected presentations and panel discussions can be accessed here (in German).
