Empirical Research on the Inclusion of Care Workers and Nurses with a Migration Background

The project “Gesundheit! Inclusion in the Care and Nursing Sector” is funded by Stiftung Mercator and based at the FAU Research Center for Human Rights Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU CHREN). Against the backdrop of increasing demand for skilled workers in the care and nursing sector and the growing visibility of care gaps, nurses and care workers with a so-called migrant background are already indispensable. Their recruitment, and especially their sustainable employment, largely depends on working and living conditions as well as their professional and social inclusion.

This new research project addresses these issues by focusing on the conditions for sustainable employment within care facilities and social inclusion in everyday life. It aims to derive factors that structurally promote equal and equitable inclusion and retention within institutions and in regions in Germany. Finally, recommendations for action will be developed for various stakeholders, particularly at the municipal level.

Project themes

To identify favorable working and living conditions and to better understand the factors influencing retention, we adopt a longitudinal perspective, including a retrospective analysis of recruitment and the settling-in process in Germany. Additionally, we conduct cross-sectional comparisons of the selected regions.
